The growth of women’s soccer

As you might know, in Barcelona and Spain in general soccer is an important sport. With the famous “La Liga” and the men’s team being the World and European champions in 2010 and 2012, of course it became something really important for people.

But as you might have heard, soccer is not just for men. Indeed, even FC Barcelona has a Women’s team which is currently holding the first spot of the championship. In their team, they have some of the most famous and best women’s players like Alexia Putellas from Spain, Asisat Oshoala from Nigeria and many more.

They even went to the final game of the champions league last year but unfortunately, they lost against Lyon which is also a very good team. This year, Barcelona Femini still had their chances. For the quarterfinals, they would have played against Atletico de Madrid which is holding the second stop of the championship. This game was already sold out in Madrid, but unfortunately it won’t be played.

The stadium of Barcelona Femini is not as big as Camp Nou and is called Johan Cruyff Stadium. It can welcome up to 6.000 people. Hopefully in a near future, the team will be able to play in the famous Camp Nou.

Concerning the international soccer, Spain is getting better and better each year. They might even have a chance to win the next women’s euro. Their potential rivals at the moment would be France, England and the Netherland.

About the Women’s World Cup, it took place in France last summer, but Spain was beaten by the USA in the round of 16.

The US Women’s National Team is one of the best teams in the world. In fact, they won the world cup four times, including the last two ones. I had the chance to witness it last summer and the atmosphere was amazing.

The final was Netherland – United States and the final score was 0-2.

This world cup really brought a lot more visibility for women’s soccer and this is amazing to see the leagues grow in every country.

Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go until men and women are equal in this sport, but I am optimist that it will happen in a near future.
